This dictionary deals as comprehensively as possible with the terms of address - names, words, and phrases such as ‘John’, ‘darling’, ‘you stupid fool’ - used by English-speaking people. It adopts a descriptive approach and is, I believe, the first dictionary of its kind for any language, It is, of course, quite unlike the prescriptive and highly limited guides to the use of titles which have previously appeared, though some guidance on vocative usage is given in passing. I have no doubt that it was time for a dictionary like this to be compiled, and it is right that it should be concerned with English.
